Charlotte Mason was a turn of the century British educator who gave much original thought to education and tested her methods for many years with great success. She founded the House of Education in Ambleside England in the beautiful Lake District.

Mater Amabilis (pronounced MAH tur  ah MAH bih liss) is a title of Our Lady in the Litany of Loreto ( Mother Most Amiable).  It is one of the intermediate advocations that qualify or characterize the person of  Mary as mother. Mary, under the title Mater Amabilis, is our patron.  She is our model of how to be a mother.

We pray our children may always see us as *mother most amiable* and that the Mater Amabilis curriculum and all those who use it and support one another in it, will always serve to help fulfill that role in the lives of our children.

Mater Amabilis is also the name of the Catholic
parish located in Ambleside England, where Charlotte Mason lived and taught, and was the inspiration for the name of this program.

Who We Are

Two Catholic homeschooling mothers an ocean apart but bonded in friendship by our love of the Catholic Faith and mutual respect for Charlotte Mason.

Kathryn Faulkner - British mother of 3 &  Michele Quigley - American mother of 10.

Like many of you, we are homeschooling mothers with limited time.  While we are happy to put our time into this curriculum, our families must always come first.

For questions and specifics on implementing the program we ask that you please join the
Teacher Training Forum at Yahoo groups. The forum provides support in implementing the methods of Charlotte Mason and tips for adapting these methods to today's family. Discussion is limited to the curriculum itself and the implementation of CM's methods.  While we would love to be able to answer the many private e-mails we receive, we find help is better given through the forum so that we can focus our efforts and so that everyone else can benefit as well.

G.K. Chesterton and the PNEU

This picture shows G.K. and Mrs. (Frances) Chesterton with Dorthea Steinthal (standing), the very first PUS (Parent's Union School) student.  Dorthea's mother Emmeline is said to have been a great friend of the Chestertons and was highly instrumental in starting the PEU (Parent's Educational Union, later changed to the Parent's National Education Union or PNEU).  Before her marriage, Mrs. Chesterton worked in the London office of the PNEU.  Seated in the middle is Rhoda Bastable.
