High School Religion Level 5 Year 2 Course

High School Religion: The Growth of Our Catholic Faith

Recommended for Level 5 Year 2, but appropriate for any student.

All previous versions of lesson plans can be found on the Archived Lesson Plans page.

Course Description

Students deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith through Scripture, papal encyclicals, and spiritual writings. The course integrates regular Scripture reading following a Bible reading plan with study of Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical Spe Salvi and readings from theologians, and spiritual masters from the medieval period. Primary sources include works by St. Leo the Great, St. Gregory the Great, St. Benedict, St. Anselm, St. John of Damascus, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Francis of Assisi, and Thomas à Kempis, as well as Church documents such as the Fourth Lateran Council. Students provide regular narrations and may approach the course as both an academic study and a devotional practice.

  • estimated reading time 25-30 minutes
  • Excerpts from The Little Flowers of St. Francis are assigned in weeks 19-22. If students read this book in Level 3, it could be revisited or omitted.
  • Note: Week 15 is a long assignment. Students who have time later in the week may opt to save chapter 18 for a later day.

Spiritual Reading – Choose one of the following books or another one of interest. We encourage spiritual reading to be done during a time of prayer or at adoration.

  • The Mass in Slow Motion, Knox [Amaz]
  • The Sacraments: Discovering the Treasures of Divine Life, Kauth [Amaz]
  • On Spiritual Friendship, Aelred of Rievaulx [Amaz]
  • Searching for and Maintaining Peace: A Small Treatise on Peace of Heart, Philippe [Amaz]

Lesson plans

All readings are narrated, orally or in writing. If the reading load seems heavy on top of other reading in your student’s day, it’s all right to move all religion to a “devotional reading” slot in the day, and to encourage the student to approach it in the spirit of Lectio Divina, asking the Holy Spirit to direct this reading, and writing down what stands out. In other words, this subject may be approached in the spirit of growth in the Christian life, rather than as a purely academic subject, though parents will still want to ask for narrations.

The student is also encouraged to keep a commonplace book, in which to copy out any passages which particularly stand out. The student is also encouraged to commit favorite psalms and other scripture passages to memory.

The Joy of Copywork

by Sally Thomas I’ve always loved copywork. In grade school, the nicest days – aside from the days when the art teacher read us Amelia Bedelia – were the days when the teacher handed us a poem, purple, damp, and vaguely vanilla-scented, fresh from the ditto machine. Generally it was a poem of the season, … Read More about The Joy of Copywork
